MASS DOG POISONINGS IN PODGORICA: Two Hundred Animals Killed by Poison, Perpetrators Get Lenient Sentences!

As many as 200 dogs have been poisoned in the capital since 2018, said Tijana Pejović of the NGO Srećne šape (Happy Paws).

Numerous dogs in the capital have been poisoned, and the NGO is appealing to the authorities to react and punish the perpetrators.

“The first thing that greeted me was a dog that had been on the table for five hours while we tried to save it. Together with the Municipal Police officers we visited the locations, tried to remove the poison and checked whether there were any more poisoned dogs,” she said.

She pointed out that the police officers in the field were very courteous.

“But as for the further procedure, we will see how it goes, because only a small number of those responsible for these crimes are ever punished. We have the case of a woman who poisoned two owned dogs and received a suspended sentence,” she stressed.

There is a penal policy, we have the Law, endangering their lives and habitat is punishable, but in practice, she says, it is a dead letter.

“We have a serious problem in society. According to the statistics, most poison is thrown in parks, on green areas and in places where children play and watch it happen. This is a serious social problem.”

Pejović says that the responsibility lies with the services and institutions, but that it is also a problem of society as a whole. “I blame both the institutions and individuals for everything that is happening to us,” Pejović stressed
