Circus near Podgorica left 15 camels in a truck to starve to death

For ten months, 15 camels left by the „Monte Carlo“ circus on the outskirts of Podgorica, kept in a truck in the Dahna neighbourhood, have been living through an ordeal, and the responsible services in the capital do not care.

The non-governmental organisation „Spas“ has sent an appeal to the Veterinary Inspectorate, the Municipal Police, the Environmental Protection Agency, the ministries of agriculture and the interior, as well as the European Union delegation, demanding that the fate of the remaining camels be resolved as soon as possible. Nobody is taking care of them, so the fear that they will die is very real. Because of the poor living conditions over the past months, many animals have already died: Cameroon goats, ostriches, llamas... The NGO points out that the Italian circus came to Montenegro last year with around thirty animals and put on its shows all over the country, only to leave in August with only half of its animals. The trucks with the abandoned animals are parked in the Dahna neighbourhood of Podgorica, and one of the neighbours says there were more of them at the beginning. „Over time they died, because they never got out of the truck. And now those poor camels that are still alive are suffering and dying slowly. The neighbour who feeds them only comes every third day. Plenty of butchers and people from livestock markets have come here too, wanting to buy some of the animals for meat„, says a resident of Dahna. NGO „Spas“ stresses that they have no authority to seize the animals, which is why they are appealing to the institutions of Montenegro, each within its own remit, to react urgently and save the animals, because the conditions they live in are unacceptable. „The state the animals are in is best shown by the fact that the camels have lost their humps. These animals should be placed in animal shelters, and an investigation should be launched against the perpetrators of this criminal act of animal abuse and neglect„, says NGO „Spas“, adding that they will provide accommodation for the camels until the authorities find the best solution.
