Bobbie, the Wonder Dog

In the summer of 1923, Frank and Elizabeth Brazier set off from Oregon to Indiana with their two-year-old Scotch Collie mix to visit family. When they stopped at a petrol station in Indiana, while they were filling up, he was attacked by three dogs and ran away. They looked for him everywhere, but there was no trace of him. They returned home to Oregon convinced they would never see him again. Six months passed without any sign of Bobbie. After they had given up all hope, one day their daughter spotted a thin, worn-out and exhausted dog on the street that looked like Bobbie. His joyful reaction proved it was him. Thanks to the people who had given him shelter for a day or two along the way, people from Portland managed to reconstruct the complete route he had travelled.
To get back to his family, in six months he had crossed two thirds of America, almost 4,000 kilometres. He crossed the Rocky Mountains in North America in the middle of winter, and in the end earned the nickname "Bobbie the Wonder Dog". This feat made him the most popular dog in the country. He was the inspiration for "Lassie Come Home".
