Belgian Shepherd (Malinois)

The Belgian Shepherd is a highly intelligent and obedient dog, with an excellent protective instinct and a sense of space. It needs good socialisation so that it does not become oversensitive and shy. Protection is its basic instinct, so it should be accustomed to people and other dogs while it is still a puppy. It should be a member of the family, and it is wrong for it to live in a kennel, especially if it cannot keep an eye on its family. This shepherd requires an experienced owner, strict but not rough. If you are rough, it will be disobedient and refuse to follow commands. The owner should show reliable, natural authority over the dog and set consistent and clear rules of behaviour.

Belgian Shepherds are working dogs. If we do not give them duties, their ability and intelligence lead them to find tasks for themselves. They excel at police work and as protection dogs. Still, they can be exceptional pets if they have an owner who knows how to occupy their mind and be a good leader to them. They are extremely watchful and loyal. They are gentle with children if accustomed to them in time. Be careful when introducing it to other dogs and other animals, as it can be quite distrustful and display dominant behaviour, especially if it is not well socialised. The owner should show it that dominance and aggression are not desirable traits. It needs daily training and walks so that it does not become destructive and overly demanding. It is extremely energetic and highly intelligent, so it learns easily and quickly. It often displays true herding-dog traits, running in circles for hours or nipping at people's feet, so you have to teach it not to do the latter.

Since the Belgian Shepherd is a very demanding dog in terms of training and upbringing, whether your dog shows aggression or not depends on the owner's attitude. Before you decide on this puppy, you should consult someone who already has such experience. Choose it only if you know how to be the “alpha” to your dog

Living Conditions and Care

The Belgian Shepherd tolerates indoor living if it is walked enough. It needs to have a yard at its disposal. A cooler climate suits it, but it adapts to heat as well. It can live outdoors, but would rather be with its family. It is very active and needs as much walking and training as possible. The coat should be brushed occasionally, and bathing avoided. It sheds quite heavily twice a year.

Health Problems

The Belgian Shepherd is a very hardy dog with no major health problems. Rarely, the following may occur: skin allergies, eye problems, hip and shoulder dysplasia.

Life expectancy 12 to 14 years.
