The collar is designed to be worn around the dog's neck so that the electrodes pass through the dog's fur and press directly against the skin. When activated, there is a potential of 1,500 to 4,500 volts across the electrodes, resulting in a painful electric shock. Some collars may have even higher voltages. Unfortunately, it is impossible to confirm the shock voltages, because manufacturers are very secretive about the amount of voltage their systems deliver, and we must not forget that they do this purely for profit. Besides shocking your dog, these collars can cause burns, which can be seen on dogs that wear these devices.
There is no doubt that electric collars cause pain, and that the pain has to be strong enough to bring about a change in behaviour.
Remote-controlled dog training collars use a transmitter. By pressing a button on the transmitter, an electric shock can be delivered from a distance. A sound signal may be played before the shock. Physiologically, the dog's body reacts in the same way a human body does under stress. Stress causes an increase in the hormone cortisol as well as other biochemical changes. Elevated cortisol levels are also linked to increased aggressive behaviour. Although such punishment may temporarily stop unwanted behaviour, it often creates new and additional problems.
Scientists conducting research on electric collars have shown that, in addition to the pain, the dog suffers long-term effects of stress, to the point that the dog continued to associate its owner with fear and anxiety long after it had received the shocks. Electric shock often causes anxiety in a dog. The cause of that pain is often linked to whatever the dog was focused on at the moment the shock occurred. That can be something completely harmless, such as another dog, the neighbour's cats, or a person or child walking past your yard. If the dog runs towards a child intending a friendly greeting and receives a shock at that moment, it is very likely that your dog will associate that pain with that child, which can lead to further aggression towards children. Even if there is a warning sound, it can create even more agitation and anxiety in the dog.

Ja sam kao klinka na poklon dobila haskija, rasu koja je poznata po tome da nece da slusa, i isto nisam htjela da čujem za elektro ogrlice, davilice sa bodljama i sl, a sve blaze metode nisu uspjele+sto ja nisam stroga i samo sam je mazila bez ikakvog autoriteta. Rezultat: problematičan pas sa 4,5 godina, mora biti zavezan/box da ne davi susjedove kokoške, a da šeta ne zna n i k a k o, iz dvorišta pobjegne. Moji roditelji hoće da je se reše i rešenje nemam. Susjed ima 3. psa, umiljata, voljena, ne izlaze iz dvorišta, a od kad ih ima samo jedan je dresiran bez ‘sile’, ‘na nagradu’ jer je bio dobar ‘od sebe’, a dva electričnim ogrlicama jer im nije mogao ništa, kao ni ja svom psu. A susjed sigurno ne bi trpio da ga pas maltretira, kao što sam ja pustila. Rezultat: on nema nikakve probleme i psima je dobro Šta je za tvrdoglavog psa bolje? Da se nauči ponašat i bude kućni ljubimac ili da se umazi pa da kasnije pravi probleme i bude napušten.
