The first of May. International Workers' Day. A public holiday traditionally spent outdoors, with family and friends, in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. A national holiday!

Our centre. An oasis of humanity, surrounded by acacia woods, orchards and an unreal view of the Serbian Holy Mountain, of Ovčar and Kablar. A place of clean mountain air. Home to more than one hundred and twenty abandoned dogs. Doors always open to anyone and everyone.

Serbia. Land of the good. Land of the just. Land of the faithful. Land of the strong. Land of the humane.

Not a single person visited our centre today!

Not one family decided to spend the holiday by bringing their children to play with the dogs. Not one couple in love came to enjoy a bench surrounded by beautiful Huskies nuzzling up to them. Not one individual came to ask about the possibility of adopting one of our dogs. Not one company, private or state-owned, proposed an organised visit or a team building day or picnic for its employees or their families. Even those who left their pets with us did not come to spend the day with the ones they left here, perhaps precisely because of work.

We are not good. We are not just. We are not faithful. We are not strong. We are not humane.

We are merely hypocritical and unemployed. But we celebrate!
