Bali is a popular tourist destination for visitors from Western countries and Australia. It attracts not only those who are prepared to spend huge sums of money on an exotic, luxurious holiday, but also those on a more modest budget with backpacks on their backs.

However, according to new reports, Indonesia's most developed island also has a dark side, a gruesome scam played on tourists! Namely, restaurateurs are serving dog meat instead of chicken.

The animal protection organisation "Animals Australia" recently investigated these claims and exposed "Bali's hidden meat trade and its disturbing link to Australian tourism". The investigation showed that every day dogs, including pets, are snatched from the streets of Bali and brutally slaughtered so that their meat can be sold to tourists.

Locked in bamboo cages or plastic bags, the dogs wait for the night-time slaughter with their legs tied. Sometimes they are left like that for hours, even days, without food or water.
"This business is thriving. Year after year, seven times more dogs are killed in Bali than at China's infamous Yulin dog meat festival," the investigation concludes.

Dog meat is most often served by street food vendors, but dog meat was also found in as many as 70 restaurants. They advertise it as "satay", which suggests to guests that it is chicken.

"Tourists walk down the street, see a food stall and order a meal, unaware that the letters RW on the stall or shop mean that dog meat is being served," said Lyn White, campaign director of Animals Australia. The dog meat trade violates animal protection laws.
The investigator who uncovered the details said that he first met the key players, the dog meat dealers, and they invited him to watch how their gangs hunt, steal, poison and kill these dogs. He spoke to a vendor who confirmed that he uses dog meat, but persistently tells tourists that it is chicken.

"As an investigator of animal cruelty cases I have become used to terrible things, but nothing prepared me for the scenes of brutal hunting and torture of dogs in Bali," he said.

Harmful to people

Aside from the fact that treating dogs this way is utterly inhumane, the practice is also dangerous for people, because such a "meal" causes symptoms such as nausea, muscle pain and cramps, shortness of breath, as well as organ and nerve damage.

"If, for example, you eat a curry that contains the remains of a dog's stomach or heart, it is the same as swallowing a large quantity of cyanide, which can be very dangerous and in some cases fatal," said Dr Andrew Dawson.

Some individuals in Bali are trying to stop this horror and protect the dogs, but they say the horror has reached such proportions that without systematic help from the state they stand no chance.
