How to work out your dog's iq

How to measure your pet's intelligence quotient. With three simple tests you can work out its IQ. If the total score is 9, your dog is a real genius; with 6 to 8 points it is bright enough for a medal. If it earns 4 or 5 points it is average, and if it collects only 3 points or fewer, well, it is very cute

All dogs have three kinds of intelligence: willingness to work and obey, instinct, and adaptability. Still, do not take this test too seriously, it is first and foremost a game and a bit of fun.

Willingness to work and obedience depend less on the individual dog and more on the breed it belongs to, so in this case your dog is predestined from birth to be more or less obedient. Tests have confirmed that Poodles, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers have a highly developed intelligence for learning new commands. Check how gifted your dog is with three simple exercises:

1. Wrap a treat in a piece of baking paper.

If the dog unwraps the paper with its paws, give it 3 points. If it uses its paws and mouth, give it 2 points. If it cannot unwrap the paper and just plays with the bundle, give it one point.

This test measures problem solving.

2. Throw a towel over your dog's head.

If it gets free in under 15 seconds, give it 3 points; if it takes 15 to 30 seconds, two points. If it needs more than 30 seconds, give it one point.

This test measures planning and problem solving.

3. Put a treat or its favourite toy under one of three buckets set out in a row.

Show the dog which bucket the treat is under, then turn it away for 10 seconds before letting it go. If it heads straight for the right bucket, give it three points. If it finds the hidden treat on the second attempt, give it two points. If it checks two wrong buckets, give it 1 point.

This test measures memory.
