I named her MAJKICA, MAJA...
She was the saddest dog I had ever met. Sad, distrustful, depressed. My heart ached every time I brought them food. And she had been an owned dog, until she became a burden and an unwanted member of the household. She was driven out, cast aside... She went back to her owner several times, sleeping outside the gate, hoping, but he rejected her because he was planning to move away. She no longer fitted into his plans for life. He left the neighbourhood and left her, pregnant, to fend for herself.
She went to the nearby graveyard, hoping to find peace and shelter there for herself and the babies she was about to give birth to.
What irony... Such sadness... Six tiny lives begun in a graveyard. Condemned in advance, their fate sealed... Two boys and 4 girls. I found her when the puppies had already started coming out of their hole. I learned that some other kind people were feeding her too. The little ones were chubby, cheerful, cuddly... She was full of sorrow and would not come near even for food. Cautious, she let the little ones approach us but watched over them from a distance. A truly caring mother... MAJKICA... I visited them every day, fed them and advertised them for adoption. I begged everyone I could to take them. The two boys found their homes. One day, as usual, I set off to
feed them. I whistle from halfway along the path that leads to their hole. I expect to hear their thin little voices barking and yapping, to see them running towards me... Nothing, silence, not a sound... I reach the hole and it is empty, they are gone. That is what I had feared from the very first day. They had bothered someone, who called the dog catchers. They took them away. Maja and her 4 chubby girls. The workers at the graveyard told me that Maja had been taken to be sterilised and the puppies to the shelter.
And now, when I walk through the graveyard with my dogs, barking can be heard from one of the holes. Near the place where they used to be. The hole is deep and dark and I cannot see whether it is Maja. I left food and waited for her to come out, just to make sure it was her. I never managed to find out. The sad story of one abandoned dog... And there are so many of them. Your soul aches at the very thought... People, do not abandon your dogs!!!
